Group classes are a fun way to train your dog. It is a great socialization tool for your dog also. If your dog is not socialized he will lunge at other dogs and bark at them. Some times a lack of socialization is mistaken for aggression.
The dogs are kept at a distance during training. We do not allow them to have one on one contact. This is to avoid any fighting or negative experience while at training class. The dogs are kept in close proximity and do receive the benefit of socialization.
Group classes last about an hour. The first class is an orientation class and I prefer NO DOGS AT ORIENTATION. The reason for this is that the dogs are extremely distracted and it is difficult for owners to pay attention to the information being given to them during orientation.
During the first class with the dogs we will be learning a new behavior. We will practice and I will be watching to make sure that you are using the proper technique for teaching your dog. During the last half hour we will be talking about various problem behaviors in general and I will provide you with some problem solving techniques. During the subsequent classes we will spend the first 1/2 hour reviewing what we did the week before and the last 1/2 hour we spend learning a new behavior.
The last class is Graduation. During graduation your dog will be tested on the commands that are taught in class. Don't worry, everyone will pass. The test is simply a tool for the trainer to be sure that you have learned the technique for teaching each behavior so that you will be able to continue training practice on your own at home.
Private lessons are probably the most beneficial for you and your dog. I come to your home where your dog spends most of his time, we are able to work on any behavior problems that you may have"where they occur". For instance, if your dog is bolting out the door everytime it is left open there is no way to work on this issue during a group class, or perhaps you want to teach your dog to stay off the furniture, no way am I bringing a couch to group for training. Private lessons provide one on one training for you and your dog. Another benefit to private lessons is the ability to train off leash behaviors.
Behavior Modification with housetraining and crate training is a class for people only, so leave your pooch at home. This is informational and teaches the fine points of housetraining your puppy or older rescue dog. Housetraining is really not that hard with the right tools. Ever wondered how to pick a crate and just what is the proper use of one? Well, this class will show you the different types available and the right way to introduce a crate, also targets those issues like jumping, digging, chewing, barking etc that we try so hard to "cure". Actually these are normal canine behaviors that we find offensive. So come and learn how to teach your dog the appropriate time and place to perform these behaviors. For people only so no dogs at this one.
